Wyoming Archery Elk Hunting
Elk hunting is a popular recreational sport in the United States. Many hunters take elk using rifles, but archery elk hunting is also widespread. States with elk populations offer both forms of hunting, and slightly different regulations apply to each. Elk hunting of any kind requires patience, stamina and expertise in following tracks. Bowhunting also requires extensive practice to obtain the archery skills necessary for a successful take.

Elk in Wyoming
-
Elks (cervus canadensis) are large deer found extensively in North America, especially in the western region of the United States. Wyoming, with four National Forests, is an ideal habitat for elk. As of 2004, the state operated 22 feeding grounds for elks at an annual cost of $1.36 million. This helps to maintain the population, especially during winter food shortages, and discourages herds from encroaching on livestock feeding areas. In addition, authorities have worked to improve the natural habitat, and especially availability of suitable foliage and vegetation for feeding, to reduce dependence on feedgrounds.
Hunting Licenses and Regulations
-
The elk is a type of large deer. Wyoming's licensing system is complicated. Elk hunters choose from a range of licenses, from a general license to licenses for limited quotas in specific or combined hunting areas. Prices are different for residents and nonresidents. Hunters must also obtain a Conservation Stamp and a Harvest Information Program permit. The latter requires submitting survey information on past season hunting experiences to assist the monitoring and management of the wildlife population. A special permit is required to hunt elk in designated feedground areas. Each elk taken must be tagged, and shooting from moving vehicles or on public roads is permitted.

Seasons for Archery Hunting
-
It is important to consult the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website for detailed information on hunting seasons. Seasons vary according to hunting area, type of license, whether the target is antlered or antlerless elk or cow or calf, and whether hunting is by firearm or archery. Generally, archery licenses for elk hunting are available for late August through September. Some hunt areas have special seasons exclusively for archery hunting.
Equipment and Tips
-
Hunters discover the most suitable bowhunting equipment through practice. Developing archery skills for successful elk hunting requires long practice. Hunters must also determine which type of bow and arrow works best and the most efficient arrowhead weight. Since it is often possible to make two or three shots at the same animal, hunters should practice quickly drawing and releasing arrows. Elk are stalked in forest areas, which means hunters benefit from wearing camouflage clothing. Although decoy elks are sometimes used to attract targets, most hunters prefer to call elks using commercial elk bugles.
Wyoming is Hunting Country
-
Wyoming is well-equipped to welcome hunters of all kinds, including elk hunters. In addition to numerous outfitter stores, it is easy to find references on line to hunting camps which offer special packages and guided hunts. This allows hunters to rely on experienced local trackers to assist in the location of elk herds.
