Deer Hunting in Western South Dakota
Western South Dakota has a lot to offer deer hunters, who will have a choice of hunting either whitetail or mule deer. This area is even capable of producing whitetail and mule deer that will qualify for the Boone and Crockett as well as the Pope and Young record books. Offering quality deer to hunt, a lot of land for hunting, and a hunter friendly environment, western South Dakota is an ideal location.

South Dakota's online hunting license service is convenient to use. Hunters pursuing deer in western south Dakota will need to acquire the proper hunting license. South Dakota provides unlimited archery hunting licenses, but other rifle hunting licenses are awarded via a lottery. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks agency provides an easy-to-use online system that walks hunters through the application process. In addition to buying or applying for licenses online, hunters can purchase or apply for licenses with a number of vendors across the state.
Whitetail or Mule Deer

Mule deer and whitetail deer may be hunted in South Dakota. Whitetail deer are more common in this area, but mule deer also are present in numbers large enough to provide good hunting opportunities. Though mule deer and whitetail deer prefer somewhat different habitats, many of the larger hunting areas in western South Dakota offer hunters the opportunity to pursue both species of deer.

Western South Dakota is home to many opportunities for public land deer hunting. South Dakota offers hunters a large amount of public hunting land. Western South Dakota in particular has a large percentage of the state's public hunting land. The Black Hills National Forest, Buffalo Gap National Grassland, Custer State Park and Oglala National Grassland are some of the largest public hunting areas, but there are many others. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks also manages many game productions areas and other smaller public hunting properties.
Private Land

There are a number of ways to gain hunting access to South Dakota's private land. Western South Dakota's private land can be hunted in a number of different ways. Getting permission by making phone calls and knocking on doors is still possible, but South Dakota also offers a unique program named the Volunteer Hunter Program. The Volunteer Hunter Program allows hunters to register for the program and then provides the registry to landowners willing to allow hunters on their property. Hunters can also pay for a guided or non-guided hunt on private land in the area.

Western South Dakota is a hunter friendly area. Western South Dakota is generally welcoming to hunters. Rapid City is western South Dakota's largest city and provides all needed services. Many of the smaller towns in the area offer hotels, motels, restaurants and other retail services to serve hunters. Hunters need to be aware that much of western South Dakota is very rural and travel time to retail locations can be great and it is best to come prepared. Most of the federal lands and South Dakota State Parks in the area offer campgrounds that will accommodate tents and RVs.
