Definition of Business Formal Dress
The key to a business formal wardrobe is that it not distract from the work being done. Therefore, most of the wardrobe is very traditionally styled and colored. Business formal dress should be polished and conservative to represent credibility, authority and success in the career field for which it is being worn. There is not much flexibility with personal style in a business formal dress code.

Business formal dress requires a very conservative, formal dress code for both men and women. Typically, this type of dress code is reserved for upper management and corporate executives, but also for certain career fields as well. You may see a business formal dress code applied to those in law, government, political, healthcare or financial jobs. Typically, those wearing a business formal wardrobe are running board meetings, working directly with clients, public speaking or interacting with the public and have to reflect a very polished and poised image.

A suit is a requirement for a business formal dress code for men. Often, a navy blue, gray or black fine-quality or bespoke suit with a neutral colored button-up shirt is worn. French cuffs on the shirt also make the look more formal. A tie is a requirement, typically made from 100 percent silk. Ties are in a complementing color to the shirt and suit but do not cause distraction.

Polished black and brown thin-soled leather shoes are recommended for a business formal dress code. Dark socks should match the trousers. Cuff links are often worn by men whose shirts have French cuffs. The only jewelry worn is a nice dress watch and wedding band. Pocket squares can be worn as an option to look even more formal.

The most business formal wardrobe for women would include a matching jacket and skirt suit. However, an unmatched suit can also be worn in this business dress category. Other options would include a pantsuit or a fitted dress with a matching jacket. Double-breasted jackets would be more formal than single-breasted but both are suitable options. Skirts typically fall anywhere from right below the knee to right above the knee. Colors are more often neutral such as navy, gray, brown and black. However, elegant jewel tones and dark regal colors are acceptable also. Tailoring is impeccable with crisp edges, pressed fabric and smooth hems. High quality fabrics are typically used in a business formal wardrobe.

Business formal accessories for women don't venture too far outside the traditional medium. Pearls, gold chains, stud earrings, diamond solitaire necklaces and earrings are the standard. Other items such as scarves and belts are acceptable as long as the complement the outfit and do not distract. Shoes should always be closed toe for a business formal dress code. Strappy or open-toed shoes are too casual and inappropriate for business formal dress. Perfume should be kept at a minimum. Make-up and hair should be relatively natural yet polished.
