Although they have a lot in common, there are several key differences between Walt Disney World and Disneyland

When you think of "The happiest place on Earth" one word is likely to spring to mind: Disney. With resort locations on both U.S. coasts, you might think that the Disney experience will be the same no matter which park you visit. However, there are some key differences between these two destinations that may impact which you ultimately choose to visit during your vacation.

  1. Size

    • The biggest difference between Walt Disney World and Disneyland is size. Disney World is comprised of four total parks: the Magic Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, EPCOT and Animal Kingdom. Disneyland on the other hand is only composed of two parks: the Magic Kingdom and Disney's California Adventure. While the two Magic Kingdom parks are nearly identical (aside from a few unique rides), both California Adventure and the three other parks that comprise Walt Disney World have unique attractions that are exclusive to each park. If you are planning a long visit, Walt Disney World has more attractions, but if you want a short, economical visit, Disneyland might be a better fit.

    Attractions

    • Although both Disneyland and Walt Disney World have some attractions in common (such as the iconic Space Mountain or the high-flying Astro Orbiter), there are some big differences between the two parks. If you are looking for thrill rides, Walt Disney World has plenty to offer, including the Test Track at EPCOT and the Expedition Everest roller coaster at Animal Kingdom. However, if you are looking for family experiences, Disneyland has plenty of kiddie rides, including a car-themed area designed to cater especially to young fans opening in 2011.

    Price

    • If you do not include travel costs (which vary greatly depending on your point of origin) there are some price differences between the two parks. Disney World is generally more expensive as vacation packages generally include admission to all four parks. On-site hotels are also a little more expensive than Disneyland hotels, often because they include more amenities.

    Popularity

    • Both Walt Disney World and Disneyland are visited by millions of people annually, but Disneyland edges out the competition as the most-visited of the two locations. This could be due to its longevity (Disneyland existed nearly a decade before Disney World) or its proximity to other attractions. However, if you want to beat the crowds and long lines, it may behoove you to visit the Walt Disney World park, which sees millions less annually.

    Expansion Plans

    • Like any good theme park, both Disneyland and Walt Disney World are looking to expand in the future. While Walt Disney World's plans only involve modifying existing areas (like the Fantasyland area at the Magic Kingdom), Disneyland has announced plans to overhaul its California Adventure park using an extensive multi-year plan, which culminates in the park almost doubling in size.
