Abstract decorating is a style of decorating that has been in style since the 1960s. The method of decorating with abstract style has changed over the years, but the essential principles are the same. Abstract decorating incorporates simple colors and shapes presented together in an unusual way. Abstract decorating gives a clean and modern appearance to any room.

Characteristics

Abstract decorating style incorporates a mix of simplistic modern decorating and abstract paints, designs and accessories. Most of the room is kept simple, with one or two bold abstract designs. The abstract designs do not have to be a different color than the rest of the room, and in fact often the room looks better with fewer colors, but instead it should draw the attention of the eye in some way. Usually this is done with a unique shaped piece of art or with lighting techniques. There are three forms of abstract decorating. The first decorating style uses bright colors and unusual designs. The second form uses natural woods contrasting with other neutral colors. The focus is on abstract statues and textures. The final abstract decorating style is as minimalist as possible and uses abstract shaped furniture.

Colors

There are several color palettes that work well with abstract designs. For the first style of abstract decorating, bold colors, such as red, yellow, blue and orange work well. If this color palette is chosen, other items in the room should be kept subdued to keep the room from looking like a child's room. For the wood style of abstract decorating, blacks, whites and other neutral colors contrasted with metal accents blend well. The last style of abstract decorating uses the lightest colors, with one other accent color, usually black, but it can be any color.

Furniture Style

Abstract furniture styles are easy to find. Usually this furniture style is simplistic and has clean lines. Some abstract furniture is made to look like other objects, such as hands or lips. Abstract furniture may also have an unusual style of back, legs or an unusual texture such as smooth metal or shaggy fabric.

Art

Abstract art is the main focal point in any abstract decorated room. The focus is on one or two main pieces of art, either wall art or 3D art. The artwork is what really can stand out in an abstract room. The highest concentration of colors and textures is usually present in the artwork in any room decorated in abstract style.

Accents

Accent pieces traditionally use elements used in the rest of the room to tie the room together. Accent pieces are usually made with clean lines and basic colors. However, some accent pieces incorporate accessories that are more intricate and complex.
