Anti Aging Laser Treatments

Anti-aging laser treatments–often known as laser skin resurfacing or rejuvenation–use targeted beams of light to destroy damaged skin cells, leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society. Newer laser technologies stimulate the production of collagen during the body's natural healing process to promote the growth of younger-looking skin. Major advances in laser technology since 1990 mean there are now many different laser treatment options to target specific signs of aging, from deep wrinkles to more superficial blemishes like age spots and spider veins. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Laser treatments range from those that can be carried out in a lunch hour, allowing the patient to return to work afterward, to more invasive procedures requiring significant downtime. Non-ablative laser treatments require little or no recovery time, and are often used to treat early signs of aging such as fine lines.

Ablative laser resurfacing, however, creates a visible wound by removing the upper layers of the skin. The resulting redness and swelling lasts for two to four weeks as new skin grows over the damaged area. Ablative lasers can be effective in treating severe skin aging and sun damage. The latest fractional ablative devices are less invasive and can achieve similar results with faster healing times, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

    Treatment

    • Laser treatments vary depending on the type of laser used, but there are similarities. Before the procedure, the area to be treated is cleansed, and topical anesthesia may be applied. During the treatment, the patient wears protective glasses while the dermatologist fires a hand-held laser device above the skin. Some patients describe the sensation as feeling like a rubber band being snapped against their skin.

Afterward, patients may experience some temporary pain, redness, bruising, blistering and/or crusting. Ice packs may be applied to reduce swelling and discomfort, and the patient may be advised on post-operative skin care. For less invasive lasers, a series of three to six treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

    Effectiveness

    • Laser skin resurfacing can safely and effectively improve the appearance of aged skin, but it will not achieve the same kind of ‘lifting’ effect as a face lift. Sun avoidance can help the results last longer. It’s important not to expect instant results, especially with less invasive treatments. For example, Jeffrey S. Dover, M.D., an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University Medical School, notes that the optimal results of fractional laser resurfacing may not be seen until six months after a series of three to six treatments. Results also vary from patient to patient, and the treatment does not work for everyone.

    Side Effects

    • Lasers have fewer side effects than other skin resurfacing procedures, but there are still risks. The most common is excessive darkening or lightening of treated skin. Though usually temporary, this can be permanent, especially in those with darker skin. Secondary skin infection, including reactivation of the herpes virus, is another potential problem, and there is a relatively small risk of scarring.

    Warnings

    • Patients should tell their dermatologist prior to treatment if they have had impaired wound healing, blood-clotting problems, a tendency to scar, an infectious disease such as hepatitis or HIV, or a cosmetic procedure, or if they have taken isotretinoin (an acne medication). The American Academy of Dermatology advises patients to consult with a certified dermatologist before undergoing any laser treatment.
