The Definition of a Journeyman Plumber
Plumbers are needed worldwide for everything from small leak repairs in private homes to major pipe-laying in commercial construction. Qualifications to become a skilled professional in the plumbing industry vary by country and states, however much training is available. Divisions of job descriptions can fall under the headings: journeyman, master plumber, contractor or licensed. The journeyman must undergo specialized training to proceed in his career.
-
General
-
Plumbers can train through technical colleges or by apprenticing with established companies to acquire the skills they need for work. The definition of a journeyman varies, depending on location. Some states have official definitions, while others compile all types of plumbers into one category of professional. Requirements for certification and licensing also vary, but a journeyman in Washington state, for example, needs "8,000 hours work experience, which includes 4,000 hours commercial or industrial work." This equates to about four years of training.
Limits
-
California's Contractors State License Board defines a journeyman plumber as "a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision. But, that person does not have a license and is not able to contract for jobs that value more than $500 in labor and materials." The journeyman must check the laws and regulations in his own state to learn any similar limits on work.

Working
-
In some areas, a plumber must work as a journeyman for several years before he can apply for a contractor license. Journeyman plumbers can work for master plumbers, who have years of experience under their belt. Or they work with other contractors to build their resumes and range of knowledge.
Records
-
Keeping excellent records and documentation of all training and work in the field is important for plumbers hoping to attain journeyman status. Verbal claims or photos showing they helped on the farm are not considered valid, but job invoices, tax forms and bookkeeping or accounting files are.
Exams
-
Beyond the required number of years in training and the subsequent number of years (typically four) needed to apply for a journeyman's license or certificate, an official exam administered by a Board of Examiners must be scheduled and passed.
