Learn how an airsoft hop-up effects that path of a BB bullet.

From Cub Scouts at summer camp to BB-shooting enthusiasts taking target practice, many people want to learn how to improve their BB-gun aim and shooting ability. While you can certainly practice utilizing the scope and how you hold the gun, a little piece called an airsoft hop-up can really improve your shooting capability.

  1. Function

    • An airsoft hop-up is a small piece which sits inside the BB gun. As the gun is fired, there is a small nub (part of the Airsoft hop-up) which sticks out in the barrel of the gun. As the bullet passes the hop-up and moves into the barrel, the small nub creates an amount of back-spin on the BB. This back spin allows the BB to travel on a straighter, flatter plane as it reaches the target.

    Placement

    • The airsoft hop-up chamber sits in front of the gear-box and air nozzle but before the barrel of the BB gun. The magazine that holds the bullets sits right below the airsoft hop-up chamber. The hop-up nub is located inside the hop-up chamber.

    Firing

    • Once the gun is primed, a BB moves into the chamber just in front of the air nozzle. As the trigger is pulled, a gear box powers the air nozzle, which propels the BB through the hop-up chamber and ultimately through the barrel of the BB gun.

    Adjustment

    • The hop-up chamber has a set of gears inside of it. These gears adjust how much hop-up is in the barrel of the gun. To adjust the amount, simply turn a dial clockwise on the outside of the gun for more hop-up, or counterclockwise for less hop-up. BB-gun shooters like to experiment with how much hop-up they want when shooting targets.

    Hop-Up Bucking

    • A hop-up bucking helps secure the barrel of the gun to the hop-up chamber. The bucking is usually a hard rubber piece that fits over the end of the barrel. Be sure that when you attach the hop-up bucking to the barrel, you place the cutout at the end of the barrel under the hop-up chamber nub. This will be the place where the nub lowers and rises into the barrel. Also, the bottom of the barrel will have a groove that will fit into the hop-up bucking so that it fits securely.
