Proper Baptism Gift Etiquette

A baptism, or christening, is a solemn religious sacrament; gifts are more thoughtful and significant, than grand.

A baptism is a Christian sacrament, which uses water to wash (purify) a person, admitting him or her into the Christian community. Catholics are usually baptized as infants, between the ages of two and six months, while Protestants are baptized at any age. It is a gift-giving occasion, but a solemn one. Only those closest to the family are expected to present gifts, but these must be gifts of some substance or consideration.

  1. Godparents

    • The godparents typically give the child "something of fine or lasting quality," according to the "Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Etiquette." This may be a sterling silver mug, engraved; a napking ring with the baby's name and date engraved; or a baby's bowl. Jewelry, such as a cross or signet ring, are also common.

    Family

    • Godparents are the only people obliged to present a baptismal gift, but, grandparents and other close relatives typically present gifts as well. Here again, the gifts are typically of some lasting quality or value. Toys, clothes or other birthday-style gifts are not appropriate. Those who presented some substantial gift at birth may present a less expensive gift at the baptism, but, it should be a thoughtful one, of some family or religious significance.

    Guests

    • Guests at a baptism may bring a gift, but, those who presented a gift at birth are not obliged to present another.

    Money

    • According to "The New Etiquette," money or some manner of savings bond or certificate is a considerate gift at a baptism. The idea is to provide for the child's future.

    Opening and Thanks

    • The child's gifts are not typically opened in front of guests, rather, after the baptism or any reception that follows. The parents will write a thank-you note for each gift, on behalf of the child.
