NonyX Nail Gel Information
When nail fungus keeps your toenails misshapen, split, yellowed or otherwise unsightly, you might want to hide your feet instead of wearing sandals or running barefoot through the grass. Physician-prescribed drugs are available for this condition, known as onychomycosis. However, severe side effects can occur with these medications, including stomach disorders and allergic reactions. You might find relief with NonyX Nail Gel, available over the counter as a topical treatment.

Features
-
Manufactured by Xenna Corporation, NonyX Nail Gel is a natural product containing ethanoic acid, xanthan gum, fragrance and water. It has a consistency like weak dessert gelatin and an odor like vinegar. Ethanoic acid is another name for acetic acid, which is present in table vinegar. NonyX Nail Gel is, then, essentially "semi-solid vinegar." Xanthan gum, also a natural substance, thickens the solution in order to keep the ethanoic acid close to the nail bed for a longer period of time.
Nail Bed Infection
-
According to the company, an injury to your nail can provide entry for fungi and other microorganisms. As new skin forms, the old cells die and leave behind their keratin protein skeletons in a warm, moist environment--perfect conditions for microscopic invaders to thrive. This keratin debris and the growing fungal population push the nail out and away from the nail bed, producing a thickened, discolored appearance.
-
Function
-
Ethanoic acid attacks some of the amino acids in keratin and causes it to soften and lose its structural integrity. Xenna Corporation claims that this change in habitat kills the fungus. With a viscosity higher than water, NonyX Nail Gel maintains an acidic pH in the nail for a longer period. Under these conditions, the company says, keratin exfoliation is more effective than if a liquid product were used.
Treatment
-
Apply one or two drops of the nail gel to the nail bed twice a day. After about three weeks you can gently scrape out the white, fluffy exfoliation material with an orange stick or other manicure tool. Although it can take up to a year to completely do away with the debris, the company says that the nail will eventually get back its straight, clear appearance. Reduce the treatments to three per week to maintain the clarity and keep the nails fungus-free.
Considerations
-
No scientific evidence substantiates these claims. Xenna Corporation conducted a 12-month double-blind study that showed significant improvement in nail clarity and keratin debris reduction when NonyX Gel for Nails was used instead of a placebo gel. However, the study was not published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it did not list the number of subjects. Publicly available support for the product's effectiveness is limited primarily to anecdotal accounts.
