Spring Fishing
-
Steelhead fishing in March, April and May is done when the water is low. A fast-sinking line is best in March and a slow-sinking line provides better results as rivers and temperatures begin to rise. The last of the spring steelhead are attracted to a surface fly presentation. All fishing at this time of year is best in the lower Skeena Valley.

Summer and Fall Steelhead
-
In summer, steelhead travel up the Skeena River toward the upper branches and tributaries. The largest steelheads--the kispiox, babine and sustut are travelling during this time of year to their home rivers. Spin casting works best on the main river while fly fishers using long rods of 7 or 8 lbs., reels with a good drag and floating line do best on the upper tributaries.
The Lodge Experience
-
Steelheaders wishing an upscale experience can stay at one of the many available lodges in the Terrace B.C. area. From the lodges, anglers are taken by jet boat, drift boat or raft to the Skeena, Nass and Kitimat river systems. Fly fishing is also offered on smaller streams along the coast. The Skeena River boasts the world's longest run of wild steelhead. The lodges offer fishing guide services to maximize the success of any level of fisherman.
Special Services
-
The fishing lodges provide additional equipment and training for the angler wishing to learn new methods. Two-handed Spey casting or a single-handed fly fishing technique are both available for the angler to learn and practice. Wild steelhead is strictly catch-and-release in British Columbia but salmon can be frozen at the lodge and packaged for transport home. Steelhead fishing through resort booking or on an individually planned basis is an experience not to be missed.
