Korean Airlines was not initially created as a public airline. It was first started as a private airline in March 1969. It was later altered into a public transportation service, a change that lead to its substantial success.
Growth

From its founding in 1969 to its continued success in the year 2010, Korean Air has grown to more than 150 times its original size. The Korean Air fleet consists of 124 aircraft and is considered one of the world's top airlines--ranking in the top 20 as of 2010. Korean Air is a member of SkyTeam, an airline alliance that partners several huge carriers, including Delta, KLM, Northwest, Air France and Southern Air.

As of 2010, the number of flights that Korean Airlines has is enormous. It operates an estimated 400 passenger flights every day. The flights occur in more than 37 countries and serve approximately 115 cities.
Awards

Korean Air has won several airline awards, distinguishing itself within the air travel industry. "Time" magazine named it the Best First-Class and Business-Class Airline in 2006, as well as the airline with the Best Frequent Flyer Program. The OAG Airline of the Year Awards also named Korean Air the best economy class airline.
Deadly Flights

The deadliest incident in Korean Airlines history was flight 801, which was arriving in Guam during a night approach. The flight crashed into the jungle during landing procedures. The investigation showed the crash was the fault of the captain, who failed to execute the landing procedures correctly. Deaths resulting from the crash numbered 228.
