Impact wrenches are used for large construction and factory projects when a tremendous amount of torque is needed, much more torque than a hand wrench can easily apply. Several different kinds of impact wrenches are available, and they can use a variety of power sources and force generators to drive their action. An impact wrench is a hand-held device used to tighten or remove nuts and bolts. It has a socket drive that can be fitted with many different wrench parts depending on application, and uses both a reversible switch and a trigger like a drill so that users can operate it. The most powerful versions can produce up to 450 foot-pounds of torque.

The most common type of power for impact wrenches is pneumatic pressure. This means that the wrench is connected to an air compressor in a shop that takes in surrounding air, pressurizes it and sends the pressurized air through tubing to the wrench, where the force of the expanding pressure is used to turn the wrench.
