Small business money.

Finding the right government grant for a small business, as a start-up or for a small business expansion, is very time consuming. The grant being searched for must coincide with the type and location of the small business, and be applied for during a certain time frame. There are a lot of television commercials and Internet sites that give the impression that obtaining free government money is extremely easy. It is not, even if you buy their book, or pay for their assistance.

  1. Small Business Administration

    • Contrary to the general understanding that the SBA issues grants, it does not. The Federal Government does grant over $30 billion dollars every year. It is the SBA that administers the funds through county governments, city or township governments, independent school districts, nonprofit organizations, Native American tribal governments, and private institutions of higher education.

    Government Grants

    • GovBenefits.gov is the name of the starting place to locate U.S. government benefits that fit your specific need for assistance in your small business. There is no guarantee that your small business is eligible for government assistance. This reference can be used as often as needed as it is free. A questionnaire will need to be filled out to point you in the right direction for assistance.

    Office of Management and Budget

    • This government assistance branch is directed by the White House. It is the most current assistance resource a small business can search. Again, a bit of searching will be required to align the small business with the programs available.

    Veterans Administration

    • The Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) is the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) advocate. This is also the office to contact for "liaison support to businesses and other members of the private sector" for the "implementation and execution of the socioeconomic procurement programs."

    Local Services

    • There are local, state and federal departments that can provide information and resources--the Department of Labor, the Department of Commerce, private foundations, just to name a few. It all depends on the nature of the small business.
