About Bank Training
Entry level positions at a bank do not require advanced education, and people in those positions are given training in their first week on the job to understand the responsibilities they will be required to fulfill. Bank management may require you to have additional training and education for certain promotions.
-
Basics
-
In some cases, working in a bank does not require previous experience and training. An individual in an entry level position at a bank, as a teller or account representative, receives training on the job from supervisors. The training teaches rules and procedure, and a participant will become familiar with all of the products offered by the bank. Some banks have internal training programs that certify entry level employees to advance management positions.
Types
-
Tellers and bankers can obtain certificates and diplomas that will help them prepare for an advanced career in the financial industry. Some educators offer certificate courses designed to train employees for a specific bank position that can be done completely online or through self-study. Training may include several formats, including CDs, webinars and videos. An individual who prefers face-to-face contact with an instructor can opt for classroom courses. Some companies offer books and kits that students can use to supplement their training.

Subjects
-
During training, students learn about proper handling of cash and checks and examine privacy and security regulations that help protect the bank and its customers. An individual seeking a promotion may choose to train for a specific position. Training for aspiring loan officers includes information on commercial and consumer loans and mortgages, how to prepare loan files and understanding loan underwriting guidelines. To move into a position as a financial adviser in a bank, an individual may complete training in securities, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and bank notes.
Where to Get It
-
The American Institute of Banking offers self-paced or instructor-led training and numerous textbooks that cover everything from financial accounting to the basics of trust. The organization makes materials available for banks to use in their training programs. BIA Learning and Development offers similar products for use by bank and credit union employees. They even customize training solutions to fit a bank's specific needs. Banker's Academy also offers several computer-based self-study courses.
Considerations
-
Getting into the world of banking at entry-level is not entirely difficult. It can be a challenge, however, to be promoted without proper training. Those with diplomas and certificates in banking will be looked at as better candidates for management positions. An associate's or a bachelor's degree in business, finance or accounting improves your chances of being promoted. Training on the job is beneficial, but training through an online course or receiving higher education at a university will put you on the fast track to success.
