Alternative Energy Courses Online
The demand for cleaner power and sustainability has prompted many schools to offer online classes in the theory and technology of alternative energy. New organizations have sprung up to educate people in the field of renewable energy. Participants in these classes can earn a degree or receive training to work in the field of alternative energy and sustainability.

History
-
Modern interest in alternative energy developed during the oil crisis in the 1973 when the price of oil rose dramatically because of an Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries embargo. At that time, the idea of using alternative or renewable energy sources gained a small foothold and since then, the use of alternate forms of energy has progressed to the point where technical schools, universities and online providers have classes in which students can earn degrees or learn how to install solar or wind equipment.
Alternative Energy Class Providers
-
Students have two options when taking online alternative energy classes. They can study at schools that are recognized within the industry but not necessarily accredited with other technical colleges or educational institutions or they can take classes from accredited universities or schools.

Choosing the Right Program
-
When looking for online schools that offer training in alternative energy, students need to look for certification from the Institute for Sustainable Power Quality. This organization assesses the quality of the classes and the instructors before it gives the school a stamp of approval. ISPQ works with the Interstate Renewable Energy Council to guarantee that the programs being offered to students, whether online or in formal classes, offer quality and content to their students. IREC is a nonprofit organization that has worked to create consistent guidelines for renewable energy education programs since 1978.
Types of Classes
-
Students take classes that cover the basics and technical issues associated with designing, building and maintaining renewable energy systems. Students who want a bachelor's, master's or doctorate combine the theoretical with the practical. While some schools offer online classes, labs or field work might be required to teach the students about the hands-on work of designing and installing these systems.
Students who want to take the classes so they can work in the field of renewable energy also benefit from taking these classes, but they can select from a range of technical schools or vocational colleges that might not offer accredited degrees.
Online Classes for Alternative Energy and Sustainable Construction
-
Besides the online classes from private or public educational institutions, another approach is to take classes online from the U.S. Green Building Council, which has a program that confers the LEED certification on participants who complete the program successfully. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design. These classes teach participants about using renewable energy, site planning and sustainable building techniques so that new or existing buildings or homes are built to standards that minimize their effect on the environment. Theirs is a multidisciplinary approach. Interior designers, engineers, public policy planners, architects and construction industry employees can benefit from the classes.
