Razorless Hair Removal for Men

Razorless Hair Removal for Men thumbnail
If you're aiming for the model-smooth, hairless look, there are many hair removal alternatives to shaving.

There are many alternative forms of hair removal if you don't want to take the razor route. Shaving often causes more skin irritations than other hair removal techniques, and hair tends to grow back faster. Waxing, profession or personal; creams; pads; or laser hair removal are all great ways to get rid of unwanted hair for longer. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Professional Waxing

    • Waxing is great for removing large or small amounts of hair. Men typically wax their chest and backs and sometimes arms, legs and butt. Though it is painful, professional waxing is most effective for long-term hair removal. Most salons use the warm wax method, and waxing is done by a registered esthetician. Estheticians are skin specialists, and they will explain how the hair will be removed, treat the skin before and after the hair is waxed and give you tips for aftercare.

Professional waxing is best for any man who has never waxed before. Self-waxing is not recommended for beginners who do not know basic waxing procedures.

    DIY Waxing

    • There are many products available if men want to try waxing at home or have a spouse help them wax. Home kits are available. Choosing a wax in the beauty aisle is not difficult, but men should keep in mind their hair is coarser than a woman's. If you choose to buy a wax made for a woman, choose coarse-hair wax.

For DIY waxing you should always wait until your hair is at least 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch long. You should always clean your skin before waxing. When applying the wax, spread it in the direction the hair is growing and then pull off the waxing strip in the opposite direction.

Always read the instruction for the best results.

    Hair-Removal Creams

    • Hair removal creams are also available in any beauty-supply store aisle. Again, it is important to remember a man's hair is coarse, and so creams for coarse hair types should be purchased. Read the instructions on the box before trying to use any cream and always try a test patch on your skin before doing the entire area.

    Pads

    • Pads are similar to sandpaper and are attached to a glove. They are typically "as-seen-on-TV" and are convenient if you are in a hurry or traveling. Simply slip the pad on to your hand and rub the hair off by moving your hand in a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion. Your skin is left smooth and hairless. The one downside is only the surface hair is removed, and it will grow quicker than if you wax and remove the hair completely.

    Laser Hair Removal

    • Laser hair removal can be uncomfortable, but if you complete approximately six treatments, it's permanent. The entire process takes 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the amount and type of hair being removed. Laser hair removal is done by a physician and involves removing each entire hair follicle individually. Each hair follicle is surrounded by nerve endings, so that is where the pain may come from. However, numbing creams can be used to counteract discomfort.

    Ingrown Hairs

    • One of the most common side-effects of hair removal is ingrown hairs. This occurs when hair growing back gets trapped underneath the skin causing the area to become red and irritated. To try and prevent this from happening try exfoliating or using moisturizer with active-ingredients like salicylic acid. If you already have ingrown hairs, use tweezers to lift the hair out to the surface of the skin, but do not pull it out completely. Products with witch hazel can reduce redness from ingrown hairs.
