My Yorkie Is Losing Hair

My Yorkie Is Losing Hair thumbnail
Yorkies are known for their long, flowing coats.

Dogs can lose hair for a variety of reasons. Because dog owners often choose their dog at least in part because of his looks, sudden balding can be startling. Yorkies, because of their characteristic long, flowing coats, may actually be able to hide the hair loss until the condition is well-advanced. In diagnosing the reason behind the hair loss, veterinarians must take into account the dog's age, lifestyle, skin condition and overall health to determine which factor or combination of factors may be the culprit.

  1. Age

If your Yorkie is a puppy, hair loss may be a perfectly normal stage in his development. Somewhere between five and nine months of age, the Yorkie puppy will begin to lose his soft, fluffy "puppy coat" as his silky, fine "adult coat" grows in. This is also the time to watch as your puppy's coat develops the particular variation of the "true Yorkie coat" he will have for the rest of his life.

    Lifestyle

    • A new pet can cause stress and anxiety.
A new pet can cause stress and anxiety.

Stress can play a big part in hair loss. A new home, a new pet, or even a new baby can all temporarily disturb the sensitive nature of the Yorkie. As his stress levels rise, he may lose hair in clumps, or he may begin chewing out sections of hair as an anxiety release. If you notice wet, sticky areas on his coat, it's a sure sign he's been chewing. Small changes in routine can usually solve the issue, but in some cases, anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed.

    Skin Condition

    • Hair loss can be a symptom of a skin issue.

Hair loss can also be a symptom of a skin issue. Allergies can manifest themselves in the skin and cause hair loss, and flea infestations can trigger episodes of chewing that may leave your Yorkie a little balder. Skin infections or mange will also cause hair loss, and will likely be accompanied by scaly or oily patches and sores. Depending upon the condition, oral or topical medication may solve the problem and allow the hair to re-grow.

    Overall Health

    • Older dogs are at risk for diseases that cause hair loss.
Older dogs are at risk for diseases that cause hair loss.

Certain chronic diseases list hair loss among the early warning signs. Yorkies are especially prone to hypothyroidism, and Cushing's disease is also somewhat common. Although these conditions are more common in older dogs, symptoms can arise at any point in the dog's life, and are best treated early. Many chronic conditions require lifelong medication, but symptoms generally subside once treatment begins, and the hair will usually grow back.

    When to See a Vet

    • If hair loss is accompanied by other symptoms, see a vet.
If hair loss is accompanied by other symptoms, see a vet.

If you notice any other symptoms at all, it is best to consult a vet. Loss of appetite, lethargy, and weight gain or loss may indicate something systemic, while redness, sores and constant licking or scratching can signal a skin disorder. If you suspect anxiety and stress to be playing a role in the hair loss, speak to your vet about what can be done to help your dog adapt, and whether or not medication is necessary.
