Types
-
There are different types of vinyl decals, which is important to know when using them and for choosing the right ones for your needs. The two basic types are the self-sticking vinyl decals, which come with adhesive backing like stickers, and pre-pasted wallpaper cutouts. The latter is much like wallpaper but without any cutting or designing, which makes it easier for you to get the look you want in the room. There are also self-sticking wall borders and wallpaper border cutouts made of vinyl that can make it easier to decorate a room.
Custom Vinyl Decals
-
When you cannot find vinyl decals in the style you need, you can have custom decals made for you. These are cut from larger pieces of vinyl in the colors and shapes of your choice and then printed out in the designs you want. They can even be made to spell names or words. Motivational words and phrases are a popular choice in vinyl wall decals, but you can have custom decals designed to say anything you want.

Application
-
Application is fairly simple with vinyl decals. Typically they are made with adhesive on the back that will stick to the wall and, when removed, does not cause damage to the wall or paint. These self-adhesive decals are made to be removable from any clean, smooth surface, which makes them easy to apply, remove and reapply. They are made of durable vinyl, which allows you to wash the walls without removing the vinyl decals.
Pre-pasted wallpaper cutouts have dry adhesive on the back. To apply them to the wall, you just use a damp sponge or cloth to wet the back of the vinyl cutouts and activate the adhesive. You can apply them to any smooth surface, such as walls, doors and furniture.
Removal
-
Part of the appeal of vinyl decals is that they are specifically designed to be removable. It's important to follow all removal instructions properly, however, to maintain the original surface of the wall when you remove the decals. Self-sticking decals usually just peel away with little to no residue left on the wall. It's advised that you test the wall surface before you apply the product, especially for a long-term basis.
Pre-pasted wallpaper decals are made to be semi-permanent and are created with water-soluble glue. Getting them wet will help you to remove them from the walls, but you also have to be careful when washing the walls that you don't get the decals too wet and remove them accidentally.
