Red Moles and Skin Disorders

Moles on the skin are often warning signs of skin disorders and cancers. However, it is difficult to determine if the appearance of a red mole is harmless or a sign of skin cancer. Red moles are tiny growths on the skin surface that may appear suspicious. These moles are much like normal moles except that they are red or pink. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cherry Hemangiomas

    • A round, red spot on the skin may not be a mole at all. Instead, it may be a cherry hemangioma. It is a noncancerous, flat or slightly raised area that is red or purple in color. The bumps are usually small and appear in older adults. They are usually caused from an overgrowth of the smaller blood vessels or capillaries in the body. They tend to run in families and are harmless.

    What Are True Moles?

    • While most red moles are not dangerous, there is another group of red moles, known as true moles. True moles are pigmented and a little raised from the skin. They can be red, pink or brown. True moles are also usually benign.

    Which Red Moles Are Harmful?

    • There are some red moles that can be harmful. These are known as pyogenic granulomas. These are also red in color and a little raised from the skin. However, they grow rapidly and form lesions on the skin. They are much softer than other moles and can bleed easily if subjected to the slightest trauma, such as being scraped or bumped.

    Red Moles and Skin Cancer

    • Melanoma is a form of skin cancer in which moles, which can be red or other colors, appear and change shape, size and color over a period of time. A dermatologist can examine such a mole and determine whether it is benign or malignant. Basal cell cancer is another skin cancer in which red-colored lesions appear on the skin.

    Removal of Red Moles

    • Red mole removal may not be necessary because they are usually benign. However, some people may want to remove the moles for cosmetic purposes. A dermatologist can examine the mole and recommend proper removal procedures. Laser removal of moles is one of the most preferred methods of red mole removal. This method uses a high-beam laser to remove the mole painlessly, usually leaving no scars behind.
