History
-
Treviglio is part of the province of Bergamo in Northern Italy, located approximately 20 miles (50 km) east of Milan. The municipality (comune) was founded in the early 11th century and became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. In 1915 Benito Mussolini married Rachele Guidi in a civil ceremony in Trevilglio. The economy was mainly agricultural well into the 20th century, but was also noted for its trade in furniture and silk. Now it is home the tractor manufacturer Same Deutz-Fahr.
Transportation
-
The best way to reach Treviglio is by train. Herman Melville made an unfortunate stop there while traveling between Milan and Venice. He left the train in Treviglio to take a horse drawn carriage through the country-side in order to transfer to a new train into Venice. Fortunately for the modern traveler Treviglio is accesible with the current Italian railways, the Milan-Venice and Milan-Bergamo line both make stops there. The Milan-Venice is the more convenient, stopping at the central station of Treviglio.
Renting a car is another option if you are not on a strict budget. The city can be reached via N.11 from Milan to Brescia or N. 42 from Milan to Lodi and Crema. One of the benefits of renting a car is the opportunity to stop at sites along the way.

The Basilica of San Martino is the most famous piece of architecture that Treviglio has to offer. Its current facade dates from the 18th century, but the structure was first completed as early as 1008 A.D. San Martino contains the Madonna with Saints by Bernardo Zenale, a regional masterpiece in religious art.
