What Is Spybot SD 160?
Spybot SD 1.6.0, officially known as Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6.0, is a slightly outdated version of Safer Networking Limited's acclaimed antivirus and anti-malware software. The most recent version, 1.6.2, is free to download. Spybot Search & Destroy has been a part of the anti-spyware scene since 2000.

A Brief History of the Software
-
German software engineer Patrick Michael Kolla created the Spybot Search & Destroy software in 2000 when he was a student. He initially designed it to target only two adware programs that were prevalent at that time. He later expanded it and signed a deal with Irish distribution company Safer Networking. Spybot Search & Destroy is compatible with all Windows operating systems dating back to Windows 95. The program is released as freeware, meaning it is free to download and use.
What Does Spybot Search & Destroy Do?
-
This program offers little protection against viruses and should be used with other antivirus software, yet it provides broad protection from spyware and adware. Spybot S&D can scan, immunize and remove spyware and adware programs. It detects unwanted alterations to--and repairs--the Windows Registry. It also detects browser hijackers that bring you to unwanted websites, browser helper objects that affect how Internet Explorer runs, computer cookies, keyloggers and some trojan viruses that download malicious scripts to your system.

Compatibility Issues
-
Although Spybot S&D is compatible with almost all versions of Windows, it may be incompatible with certain programs your computer runs. Programs that will cause Spybot to stop functioning include the Kaspersky Internet Security, which forces users to remove Spybot; Trend Micro's OfficeScan, which automatically removes it with no warning; and Norton Internet Security, which reportedly had certain bugs that acted up in the presence of Spybot. The problems with Norton Internet Security were reportedly fixed in the newest version of Spybot.
Problems with Rogue Spyware
-
Spybot S&D is a helpful program, but some malicious software can get around it. That includes "rogue spyware," spyware that attempts to mimic an anti-spyware program but actuality installs spyware onto your computer. Once spyware installs itself on your computer, it becomes harder and harder to completely clean your system, as some spyware replicates itself and prevents certain anti-spyware programs from functioning correctly.
How to Properly Protect Your System
-
Use a combination of antivirus and anti-spyware programs to protect your computer. Besides Spybot, other free solutions include Avira AntiVir, Lavasoft AdAware and
Malwarebytes. These programs effectively check one another, and you can schedule each to run at system startup or in the background so that, once downloaded, they require little involvement from you.
