Wedding Etiquette and Attire for Time of Day
Wedding etiquette has changed drastically over the past several decades. With brides and grooms being more creative and less traditional, guests have to give a little more thought to what to wear to a wedding. The wedding invitation gives clues to etiquette and attire, and some brides and grooms go so far as to dictate appropriate wedding wear. Does this Spark an idea?

Formal Daywear
-
A formal day wedding is typically the most traditional. Guests are expected to dress their best. If the invitation states "Black Tie," men are expected to wear a tuxedo. If it doesn't specify, a suit and tie are appropriate. For women, a cocktail dress or dressy suit is appropriate. Traditionally, three colors are off-limits: white, black and red. Neatly groomed hair and conservative jewelry is the best way to accessorize.
Casual Daywear
-
Casual opens up a lot of options, and you have to use your best judgment. Men should still dress to impress, either with a suit or dress pants and a blazer. Jeans and shorts are inappropriate, unless the invitation says otherwise. For women, dress for the weather. A sundress or nice skirt and blouse are appropriate, and fun costume jewelry can be used to accessorize. Light makeup and natural hair are sufficient for a casual wedding.

Formal Evening Wear
-
For an evening affair, in a formal setting, men should opt for a tuxedo. Men who don't own a tuxedo can rent one, along with dress shoes. For women, a cocktail dress or formal evening gown are called for. Dark jewel tones are the most elegant, and hair and makeup can be more dramatic. Couples opting for a formal evening wedding want their night to be glamorous, so have fun getting dressed and primped.
Casual Evening Wear
-
A casual night wedding can still be glamorous, but the tuxedos can be left at home. A dark suit is always appropriate, or dark pants with a jacket and tie. For women, a sleek long dress or elegant pantsuit works well. A nice skirt and blouse or cocktail dress are also O.K., and hair and makeup can either be dramatic or more natural. Shiny silver or pearl accessories will sparkle and accentuate any outfit.
Themed Events
-
Sometimes couples will opt to have a themed wedding and request that guests dress in a certain way. For instance, a Disney-themed wedding may request that women come dressed as their favorite princess. Another popular theme is the period wedding, such as 1920s flapper attire or 1950s Hollywood. If you are uncomfortable dressing according to the theme, keep your attire simple and as close to the theme as possible. When in doubt, ask the bride or groom.
