Carbon Filters

Carbon filters can remove the organic compounds in water that cause bad odor and taste. As the name suggests, the filters contain carbon and the purity of the water depends on the quantity of carbon in the filters and how long the water is kept inside the filter. A faucet mount filter can cost about $35; a system for the entire house costs approximately $1,000.
Ion Exchange System

The ion exchange system removes calcium and magnesium from hard water. It also removes other heavy metals such as iron, radium, barium and manganese. An ion exchange unit is also helpful in treating water containing nitrates and fluorites. In this system, water percolates through spherical resins which exchange the water ions with their own, making the water taste sweeter. The cost of the system is about $400 to $1,500.

A distillation system helps remove dissolved substances, such as lead, pesticide, sodium chloride and other organic compounds, from contaminated water. Distillation water filters heat the water to its boiling point, after which the vapours are condensed and stored. This allows the water to be cleansed of any contaminants with a higher boiling point than water. A distillation water treatment system can cost anywhere between $170 and $850.
Reverse Osmosis

The reverse osmosis (RO) system is one of the most popular water treatment systems. It helps to soften the water and removes nitrates, fluorides, pesticides, calcium, potassium, magnesium, radium, organic compounds and sulphate. An RO system filters water by the process of ionic exclusion. In this, only water is allowed to pass through the RO membrane, which rejects ions, salts and sugars. RO systems can come in various sizes, according to their intended use. A treatment system installed under the sink costs about $70, while a system that covers the whole house costs about $550.

There are several other types of home water treatment systems. A chlorination treatment costs about $350 to $900, UV radiation costs $170 to $700, and ozonization costs about $170 to $1370. Chlorination treatment is not used for drinking water, as the chemicals may be hazardous to health. The UV radiation systems sanitize water by producing UV lights from mercury filaments. In ozonization filters, unstable oxygen molecules are added to the water, which helps to disinfect the water. The oxidized contaminants are large enough to be trapped in the filters of the treatment system.
