Cummins is a company which designs, builds, and sells diesel and natural gas engines. It started in 1919 and still produces quality equipment. The company headquarters is located in Columbus, Indiana but its reach is a global one. Heavy-duty equipment is sold in nearly every country on the globe thanks to a dealer network which numbers over 5,000. Cummins builds powerful engines for powerful trucks, and its performance figures are quite strong.

  1. Cummins and Dodge

    • Dodge and Cummins are a strong team. The pair started working together in 1989 when a Cummins 5.9L engine was plopped under the hood of an '89 Dodge Ram. The rest is history, as the light-duty truck world fell in love with the powerful engines. For many truck owners, torque is king and the diesel Cummins engines have that in spades.

The 2008 Cummins Diesel--A Whole New Engine

    • In 2008, Cummins has redesigned its popular diesel engine. The old 5.7L unit has been replaced with a larger 6.7L engine. This new unit makes more horsepower and torque compared to the past versions, yet it also meets tougher imposed emissions regulations. In fact, it is the first new diesel engine in a non-commercial truck to do so.

A New Engine with More Power

    • The 2008 Cummins diesel is rated at 350 horsepower. This is a gain of 25 horsepower over the previous generation engine. The real punch, however, is found in the torque rating. Torque for the 2008 Cummins is listed at 650 pound-feet and it is available from just 1,600 RPM. This is an increase of 40 pound-feet of torque over the last engine.

    Stacking Up to the Competition

    • The Cummins diesel found in the popular Dodge Ram truck is just one of a handful of options for the full-size truck market. It is the largest of the three diesels found under the hood of the three main American auto manufacturers. Ford has a 6.4L Powerstroke engine and GM utilizes a 6.6L Duramax diesel. All three options have similar power numbers.

Putting the Power to the Ground

    • All that available power courtesy of the Cummins diesel is quite useful for full-size truck owners. The heavy-duty Dodge Ram 3500 equipped with such an engine is rated to tow up to 18,500 pounds. It can also handle a payload of up to 5,130 pounds.

With a Cummins under the hood, a Dodge Ram is a powerful option for towing and hauling and is sure to make any truck owner a happy hauler.
