Facts on Skyping

Skype is one of the leading Internet communications companies. They were founded in 1993 and later purchased by eBay in 2005. They offer one of the most reliable and technologically advanced services that is available---it allows people to communicate from almost anywhere in the world as long as there is an Internet connection. Although 30 percent of Skype users use it for business purposes, many use it for recreational communication.

  1. Instant Messaging

    • One of the features that Skype offers is instant messaging to anyone in the world that signs up free with Skype. Instant messaging is nothing new, as there are many other companies, such as AIM, Yahoo and Google that have provided instant messaging years before Skype.

    Voice and Video

    • What makes Skype much more advanced and unique than other types of messaging programs, such as Yahoo or Google, is its video and voice communications. Skype offers free voice and video communication to anyone that uses the program that has a microphone and video camera.

    Landlines and Mobile Phones

    • Skype also allows users to call mobile phones; however, unlike its other services, calling mobile phones and landlines is not a free Skype service. People that use mobile or landline calling are required to pay a small amount per minute for this communication.

    Daily Users

    • Skype has millions of people that rely on Skype for communication daily. Skype ended 2008 with more than 405 million users---up 47 percent from the previous year. The company showed a net revenue of $145 million with a total revenue of $550 million in 2008.

    Concurrent Users

    • Skyping has become extremely reliable---considering that there are 15 million concurrent users and more than 300,000 concurrent calls at any given time on average. Skype represents more than 8 percent of the world's international calling minutes. Skype is also available for download in more than 28 languages and is available in most countries throughout the world.
