Finding a new job when you are unemployed can be a daunting task. State and federal programs can assist you in getting the training and education you need to get back to work. In addition, many states offer training in job hunting, resume writing and interview skills.

One Stop Career Centers
-
One-Stop Career Centers, which are sponsored by the federal government, provide their clients with a variety of employment services in one location. The services offered at each center vary depending on its location, and you may need to make an appointment before visiting. These centers can provide you with information on all the services available and can assist you with getting help paying for education and training.
Job Hunting Skills
-
If you haven't prepared a resume or gone on a job interview in awhile, you aren't alone. Many One-Stop Career Centers offer classes and one-on-one assistance for people who need help with their job search. Some centers even provide services such as skills assessment testing, which can help you find a new career; training and mentoring for new entrepreneurs and free use of fax machines and computers.

Workforce Investment Act
-
The Workforce Investment Act is a federal program that provides training opportunities for unemployed workers. Approved training programs run the gamut from various trades (such as cosmetology) to professional skills development (such as project management). The approved training courses are usually taught at community or career colleges.
Unemployment Requirements
-
Prior to taking courses or entering a training program, it is important to get permission from your local unemployment office. If you don't get permission to enter a training or educational program, you risk losing your unemployment benefits.
Financial Aid
-
Both state and federal financial aid is available to qualified students. If you have not yet completed your bachelor's degree, you may be able to get both state and federal grants (which do not have to be paid back) to go back to school. Both federal and private loans, as well as private scholarships, are available for graduate students.
