According to Brigham Young University (BYU), education and international development programs prepare the potential student or degree recipient and provide opportunities in a wide area of multinational skill areas such as cross-national studies of education, multicultural and nonformal education and globalization and educational outcomes. Furthermore, this career path is in need of qualified professionals.

  1. Opportunities and Requirements

    • Education and international development programs are typically completed at the master's level of education. Furthermore, most graduate schools--BYU is one example--require an applying student to have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in the last 60 credit hours of class work. Additionally, applicants are asked to submit a letter of intent, three letters of recommendation, a resume or vita (brief autobiographical description) and scores from the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT).

    Degree Requirements

    • Although requirements for degree completion will slightly vary depending on the program in which a student enrolls, master's degree programs will share commonalities. For example, to graduate with a master's from the BYU program, a student needs to complete 41 credit hours and to have successfully completed a thesis while maintaining a 3.0 in the program.

    Post-Degree Opportunities

    • A recipient of a master's in education and international development has several opportunities. A degree holder can enter a related field of work or use the degree to progress to a related Ph.D. program. Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that this field of education opens up opportunities both domestically and abroad. Degree recipients are found in fields such as preschool education, middle school education, high school administration and postsecondary administration; upon completion he can serve as the dean of a program or as a principal in K-12 schools, both public and private.

    Programs

    • While traditional master's programs exist, the School for International Training (SIT) Institute (sponsored by World Learning initiatives) affords a potential student the opportunity to begin field work while working toward degree completion. Furthermore, among SIT Institute offerings are programs that range from undergraduate field work to master's degree studies. She can benefit from Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certifications and conflict transformation programs among other related degrees and certifications.

    Career Outlook and Salary

    • According to the BLS, this career field is expected to grow at a faster than average rate. Moreover, career opportunities are listed as excellent due to growth in the field and the impending retirement of current educators with few qualified applicants to fill the vacancies. Finally, while salary varies depending on qualifications and chosen field, figures begin in the $50,000 range for new professional entrants and escalate up to $100,000 per year for individuals with several years of experience and related accomplishments.
