Bed Sizes: Queen Versus Full
Many people are unaware of the differences in size between full beds and queen beds. Some people mistakenly believe the beds are the same size. A full bed is also known as a double bed. In actuality, neither a full bed nor a queen bed are actually double the width of a standard twin mattress. Queen mattresses are a few inches long and wider than full mattresses, which can make a difference in sleeping and how much space the bed takes up in a room. Does this Spark an idea?

Size
-
Full mattresses are 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. For reference, 75 inches is 3 inches longer than 6 feet. Queen mattresses are 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. Eighty inches equals 6 feet, 8 inches. The queen mattress is significantly longer (5 inches) and wider (6 inches) than the full.
Price
-
Queen mattresses are usually more expensive than full mattresses. However, many companies have taken to combining the sizes, making mattresses that are labeled queen/full. Queen mattresses can cost about $100 dollars more than the price for the full. Some queen beds can cost $1,000 more. The price difference depends on the brand and the store.

Shared Space
-
Sharing a full and queen bed is significantly different. In a full bed, each person can have 27 inches of personal space. In a queen bed, each person gets 30 inches. Although an extra 3 inches doesn't seem like a lot of difference, it can mean the difference between falling off or remaining on the bed all night.
Accessories
-
Queen and full accessories are usually sold as a package deal. Bedding and sheets are sold as full/queen sizes. Because of this, there is usually little difference in the price of accessories for bedding between the queen and full sizes. However, for companies that sell separate sizes for full beds, the bedding is often less expensive.
Surface Area
-
A queen bed has the surface area of 4,800 square inches. A full bed has the surface area of 4,050 square inches. This means that the queen bed has 750 more surface inches than a full bed. This is a significant difference between the bed taking up some or most of the room in small spaces.
