It is a mother's job to give guidance and support to her children.

There are many different types of mothers, and many different ways to define the duties of a mother. A job description for a mother is not a one-size-fits-all story, but rather a compilation of various ways a mother gives guidance and support to a child.

  1. Biological Mother

    • A mother is the one who births a child.

A woman is a biological mother if she carries a child to term and gives birth. Giving birth to a child defines a woman as a mother in that moment. However, if she gives the child up for adoption or has served as a surrogate for another woman, she may or may not choose to define herself as a mother.

Although a woman may not have given birth to a child, she may still be defined as a mother if she provides comfort and guidance to that child. An adoptive mother, foster mother or stepmother is considered to be a mother if she participates in the upbringing of a child.

    Defining a Mother's Job Duties

The definition of a mother depends upon cultural and societal norms. Every society, whether animal or human, recognizes the role of a mother in the upbringing of offspring. Nearly all world religions define tasks and assign roles to mothers.

A job description for a mother varies in different societies. Generally, a mother is responsible for feeding, washing, and clothing a child. A mother is also involved in such things as teaching communication skills via language, and teaching a child how to walk. A mother provides emotional support for the child in a variety of ways, including listening and identifying the child's needs. A mother may be responsible for education, serving as a teacher, coach, and mentor. A mother may be responsible for handling the child's social calendar, scheduling play dates and extra curricular activities. A mother may be responsible as a chauffeur for the child, and may be requested to provide certain preferred foods.

Compensation and Experience Required to be a Mother

Unlike many jobs which require a level of previous experience, a mother's job duties are often learned on the job. A mother may have no previous experience with children. She may have no other offspring, and is not required to take training classes or attain a certain level of educational certification. She may, in fact, have never held a child before in her life. Experience is not required for the position of mother.

Generally, compensation is not financial, but is in the form of personal satisfaction, love and gratitude. For some mothers, this compensation is worth more than financial compensation.

A mother who works outside the home may have the same job description as the mother who is a full-time parent, with the exception of having an additional set of job duties related to her workplace. A mother's job duties rarely decrease, but may increase depending on the age and needs of the child, and the addition of an out-of-the-home profession.
