Puggles & Kids

Puggles & Kids thumbnail
In general, puggles make good pets for children.

If you have children in your home, you will want to find out whether or not the dog breed you are considering is a good fit. While it is impossible to predict the individual temperament of every dog, when it comes to puggles and kids, the evidence overwhelmingly shows that this popular hybrid does very well around children and makes a good family pet.

  1. Learning About Puggles

    • A puggle is a cross between a beagle and a pug, and is said to combine the easygoing friendliness of both breeds with the calm nature and disposition of the beagle. Many puggles have the compact body of a pug with the longer ears and nose of a beagle, but their appearance varies, depending on which genetic traits they inherit. In general, puggles are medium-sized, moderately shedding dogs that weigh between 17 and 30 lbs. when fully grown.

    Puggles and Kids

    • Both pugs and beagles are high-energy breeds and puggles are known for having a playful but not overly hyper disposition. Puggles and kids, even small children, usually get along well together, since the puggle's need for frequent attention and exercise make them engaging and entertaining companions. Puggles are also very affectionate and, like beagles, love to run.

    Training Puggles

    • While pugs are generally easy to train, beagles are known for having a stubborn nature that can make training them difficult. If children are going to be interacting most often with a puggle, you should involve them in the training of the new dog as much as possible so the dog will come to recognize the children as pack leaders and learn to obey them.

    Finding a Puggle

    • Puggles are available in pet stores, from breeders, and from animal shelters and rescue groups. Ask at the pet store where they obtain their puppies and get a health certificate before you bringing your new pet home. Breeders should be able to provide you with in-depth information about the puppy's health history and parents and should also provide you with a certificate of health. Puggles are sometimes available from local animal shelters and private rescue groups. The animal shelter in your area will be able to tell you whether or not they have puggles available and will be able to put you in contact with any puggle or small breed dog rescue groups nearby.

    Considerations

    • While puggles and kids usually get along well, it is always a good idea to supervise young children around any dog or puppy.
