Learn where to locate information about stocks online to aid your investments.

The stock market moves at lightning speed. The moment a company reports earnings, information about those earnings is screaming across the Internet. To be an informed investor, you must know where to look to find information pertinent to your investments. While there are many financial websites online, it is imperative that you stick to those that offer quality information.

  1. Brokerages

    • Many investors perform their trading online. Through a myriad of online brokers, they are able to log into their account to check their account balance or trade stocks. However, these brokerage websites are also excellent for gaining new information about the market and the companies that you wish to invest in. Companies that are traded release quarterly statements. Most brokerages offer downloads of those statements as well as news press releases concerning the companies. Even if you do not have an account with a specific brokerage, you can usually still access quite a bit of information about various companies because eventually, the brokerage wants your business.

    Exchanges

    • The exchanges are the places where stocks are traded each day. For instance, the company Apple (ticker symbol AAPL) trades on the Nasdaq exchange, while the company Coco-Cola (ticker symbol KO) trades on the New York Stock Exchange. Each of these exchanges offer information on their respective websites regarding the exchange averages, company press releases and other pertinent market information.

    News Corporations

    • There are many financial websites that cover stock information on a moment-to-moment basis. Like the brokerages, these websites will provide information about stock prices, the earnings of a company, expert recommendations and regulatory filings. Some of the popular online websites that also offer corresponding television coverage are CNBC, Fox Business and Bloomberg.

    SEC

    • The SEC, or Securities and Exchange Commission, is the regulatory board in the United States that overseas the exchanges traded within the United States. Companies must file regular reports that detail their financial health. Through the SEC, you can get copies of all public records for a specific company that you wish to invest in.

    Newsletters

    • Because there is so much money at stake every day in the stock market, there are many stock pickers in the universe who try to game the market. Through a myriad of strategies, these stock pickers tout various investing strategies and stock picks. Many of these stock pickers offer newsletters to investors. Some of these investment newsletters will charge money, while others are free. While these newsletters can be a great source of information, you should always remember that ultimately it is up to you to do your own stock homework in regard to the companies that you purchase for your portfolio. When you get an idea from a stock newsletter, use the other online tools, such as the information section of your brokerage account, to verify the information.
