School campus security officers ensure the safety of students, staff and faculty, as well as the property. Those who care about the general well-being of others may find that a job in campus security to be an ideal career. Having some form of educational training can greatly increase an applicant's chances of getting such a job, and is necessary in states that require campus security officers to become licensed.

    • School campus security officers ensure that no crimes are being committed. This often means theft, vandalism and assault. If a serious crime is committed, they will generally need to call in a higher authority for an arrest to be made. Security officers who work on school campuses are also responsible for making sure that laws are being followed, such as smoking regulations and preventing truancy for elementary and secondary school systems. Security officers are often given cars to patrol the campus.

    Education/Training

    • While some states only require a high school diploma, jobs are very competitive. Having at least an associate's degree in criminal justice can help increase an applicant's chances of getting a job.Once in the position, they will need to complete on-the-job training. In many states, continuing education is required for certification.

    Licensure

    • Campus security officers are generally required to be licensed in most states. Individuals will need to pass a background test and drug testing. They will also be subject to random drug testing and must also complete several educational training courses for certification. While additional certification is not necessary, it is available and can increase an applicant's chances of becoming employed. A security officer's power to make an arrest varies according to state, but most can obtain licenses through additional training hours to carry weapons.

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, average annual earnings for all security officers is about $23,460. While an average salary for security officers who work at community colleges and universities is not listed, the BLS lists $27,980 as the average yearly salary for security officers who work at elementary and secondary schools. Many security officers only work part-time to cover night or weekend shifts, so many have second jobs. Security officers who work for colleges and universities may be offered free or lower cost tuition.

    Job Outlook

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for all security officers is expected to increase by 14 percent through 2018. This is mostly due to an increased need for security and the replacement of retiring security officers. Due to incidents that have occurred on college campuses, such as the Virginia Tech shooting, it is likely that schools will continue to increase their security. That said, positions for school campus security officers are very competitive.
