Win32 errors have a variety of causes.

The Win32 error, or generic host process error, appears in Windows XP Service Pack 2. Win32 errors can be caused by a variety of reasons including improperly installed service packs, viruses or spyware. The error usually appears when the computer first loads into Windows. Depending on the reason for the error, resolving it may involve using updating websites, anti-virus software or a software fix.

  1. Terms

    • Windows XP is an operating system developed and sold by the Microsoft Corporation. A service pack is a collection of operating system updates combined into a single downloadable and executable program. A virus is a malicious program that infects computer files to do harm or steal information. Spyware is a program that collects personal information such as Internet logs and sends them to a central location for advertising use or identity theft.

    Causes

    • Win32 errors may be caused by viruses or spyware. These malicious programs interfere with operating system files and cause the error. Windows XP Service Pack 2 causes the error when it is not properly installed. The error will also occur if certain system files called DLLs become corrupted.

    Prevention

    • Generic Host Win32 errors only effect Windows XP Service Pack 2. Updating Windows XP from Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3 will prevent the error from occurring. Anti-virus programs such as Norton AntiVirus, McAfee AntiVirus, or AVG Internet Security will detect and remove viruses that cause the error. Using caution when downloading files, opening email attachments or visiting websites will reduce the computer's exposure to viruses that cause the error.

    Fix

    • If a virus or spyware is causing the Win32 error, update your anti-virus software and run a full system scan. Follow the on-screen directions to remove any viruses that are found. If you need an anti-virus program there are free versions listed in the resource section. If the error was caused by installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, reinstall the service pack and download and install Windows XP Service Pack 3. If a corrupted DLL file is the cause, follow the directions from Microsoft in Reference 1.

    Considerations

    • A separate Win32 error occurs when programs are improperly installed with a Microsoft Windows operating system. The error message will state that the program is not a "Valid Win32 Application." To fix this error uninstall and reinstall the program. You may also need to run the disk cleanup tool located in "Accessories" folder of the "Start" menu.
