Rain Gear for Dogs

Rain Gear for Dogs thumbnail
Rain gear keeps your dog clean, dry and comfortable.

Rain or shine, dogs need to go outside but those rainy days don't have to get your dog down. Clothed in the proper gear, your dog can stay dry, comfortable and clean. Many types and styles of rain gear are available, and jackets and shoes are the most common items that owners purchase to protect their dogs from rainy conditions.

  1. Jacket Basics

    • Often when it's raining it's also windy, and jackets can help protect your dog from the wind, too. Some jackets have Velcro enclosures so that they fit snugly and are easy to take on and off squirming dogs, and some have adjustable straps. Dog rain jacket sizes range from extra small to extra large. Jackets are available in a variety of colors and prints such as bright, visible primary colors. The dog jacket should be made of waterproof or water-resistant material.

    Features

    • Some dog rain jackets have hoods to protect your dog's head. Another convenient feature is an opening through which you can attach your dog's leash. Some rain jackets have reflective material to make your dog more visible. Many jackets are roomy enough that you can layer them over dog sweaters on cold days.

    Shoes

    • Dog shoes (sometimes called booties or boots) can keep your dog's paws dry in the rain and help prevent him from slipping on slick surfaces. They are often available in styles and designs that match or coordinate with rain jackets. For safety, some dog boots have reflective strips. To ensure a secure fit, dog shoes can have draw cords, elastic or Velcro straps to help them adjust well to your dog's feet. Dog shoes are available in a full range of sizes, from extra small to extra large.

    Benefits

    • Rain jackets and shoes provide many benefits to you and your dog. These include safety and health. Cleanliness is an added benefit--your dog's fur doesn't get as messy or smelly when it is shielded from rain. Rain gear saves you time, because you don't have to dry off your dog's fur as much. Your dog is more comfortable because he doesn't feel wet, and rain gear keeps him warm on days when the weather can make him feel chilly. Also, rain gear protects your dog from getting muddy during rainy weather.

    Care

    • With both jackets and shoes, make sure that the rain gear will allow your dog to move freely and that it will not get caught on things as your dog moves around. Also assure that the rain gear you purchase is machine washable and that it consists of durable materials that will withstand wear and tear and repeated washings.

    Sources

    • You can shop around for the best selection and prices on rain gear for your dog. Sources include locally owned pet stores, larger chain pet stores and online companies selling pet gear. You can find many selection and prices online, but one plus to finding rain gear in a store is that you can see colors and styles in person and can better gauge size for your dog.
