Portable High Chair Safety
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that, in 2003, high chair use caused an estimated 9,200 injuries in children under the age of 5. Because high chairs are an ideal alternative for feeding babies and young children--particularly portable high chairs that use "arms" to latch onto tables--certain safety precautions should be taken before using them. When using any kind of high chair, make sure that your child is always safely strapped in to help prevent falls and injuries. Straps can ensure the safety of the child if he leans over or moves abruptly. Safety straps also will help prevent children from sliding down the high chair and falling under the tray.

Supervising your child at all times is paramount to keeping her safe when using a high chair. When supervising, make sure you never allow your child to stand up in the high chair, climb onto it unassisted or leave her unattended, even for a moment. Most injuries in high chairs happen instantly, so constant supervision is necessary.

Portable high chairs do not come with a tray, as they use the actual table top. Make sure the table surface is clean before attaching the portable high chair. A dirty table could pose a potential health risk to your child, as he could ingest bacteria and germs when eating off it.

Portable high chairs latch onto the table for support and do not provide the child with any stability underneath, which can be a significant safety issue. If purchasing a portable high chair, select a chair that uses sturdy material and contains safety harnesses, and pay attention to any weight restrictions spelled out by the manufacturer. Regular high chairs that are made with a wide base are generally safer for children.

Locate a safe place to position your child's portable high chair. Make sure the arms of the high chair are a safe distance from table corners, and keep the table clear of any dangerous objects that your child could reach.

If your high chair has missing or damaged safety features, contact the manufacturer immediately so they can be replaced. Do not use the high chair until all safety features are in good working order.
