The Director of Golf is typically an exceptional leader with excellent management and organization skills. The main objective associated with this position is to oversee the entire golf operation at a course. Some of the responsibilities of the Director of Golf include hiring and training staff, managing the golf shop, establishing and running instruction and tournament programs, marketing the golf facility, overseeing the financial planning and budget of the golf operation and member retention and recruitment.

The Director of Golf occasionally gives golf lessons. Golf professionals, or "pros," conduct the majority of the training. The pros have an extensive background in teaching and playing golf. You will probably not see a director stand on the lesson tee for eight hours a day, however, they are available to give lessons. Many large operations will likely have a Director of Instruction on staff. The Director of Instruction reports to the Director of Golf and handles the majority of teaching.

Playing ability is another aspect that separates professionals from amateurs. It is beneficial for the Director of Golf to play with members and guests. The director will usually play with the higher-profile guests or those who can bring in money to the course or club. However, most of the director's time will be spent managing the golf operation. Time constraints will limit the opportunity to play and practice.

The Director of Golf is one of the highest positions available for a golf professional. A Director of Golf is usually a Class A member of the PGA. They typically work as an Assistant and Head Golf Professional before being promoted to the Director of Golf position.
The next step in career advancement from Director of Golf is General Manager. As the General Manager, he will oversee the entire golf facility operation. The General Manger oversees the golf operations and manages the food and beverage operation. The Director of Golf, coordinates plans with the Food and Beverage Manager.
