What Is Considered Semi-Formal Dress?

What Is Considered Semi-Formal Dress? thumbnail
A semi-formal dress code is more formal than cocktail attire and less formal than black tie.

Certain events, such as weddings or special dinners, will call for a semi-formal dress code. However, interpreting the semi-formal dress code can be confusing. If the dress code is not clear on the invitation and you're unsure of what to wear for a semi-formal occasion, asking the host is an appropriate solution. However, when in doubt of what to wear, erring on the side of formality can never steer you wrong.

  1. Decoding Semi-Formal Dress Codes

    • The biggest misconception of the semi-formal dress code is that it is the same as the cocktail attire dress code, which is less formal. Semi-formal is also a step below formal attire which requires tuxedos or dark suits. When in doubt of what to wear to an event that lists the dress code as semi-formal, always ask the host or someone who is also attending for ideas on wardrobe.

    Events and Occasions

    • The semi-formal dress code is usually requested at weddings, award ceremonies and bar and bat mitzvahs. You may also see this dress code requested at holiday events such as Christmas parties.

    Women

    • Women would be appropriate in dress separates or a fancier cocktail dress. A dressy pant suit made of fine fabric such as silk or satin would also be appropriate. Dressy shoes, pumps or strappy sandals would complement a semi-formal dress code.

    Men

    • Men should wear a dark business suit for a semi-formal dress code. A matching vest is optional but the suit should be paired with a white shirt and a conservative tie. Dressy leather shoes and matching socks are best suited for this dress code. A lighter colored suit may also be acceptable if the event is during the daytime.

    Not Appropriate

    • A tuxedo would be inappropriate for a semi-formal dress code policy. It would be seen as overly dressy. Linen and seersucker suits would also be unacceptable as they are seen as more casual. Also, flip-flops and loafers are too casual to be considered in the semi-formal dress code. A wool suit for females is also considered too informal.
