What Is Fancy Fur Yarn?

What Is Fancy Fur Yarn? thumbnail
Yarn comes in a variety of fibers and colors.

Lion Brand, the creator of Fancy Fur yarn, has stopped production of this yarn, but it still may be found in some yarn stores. Lion Brand has replaced Fancy Fur yarn with a new product it refers to as "the next generation of Fun Fur."

  1. Type

    • Fancy Fur yarn is a synthetic yarn. Its weight category is Super Bulky or weight category 6. It is also referred to as bulky or roving yarn. Manufacturers categorize yarn into six categories. Super fine yarn or baby yarn is category 1, for example. Manufacturers determine the weight based on how many stitches it takes to knit or crochet 4 inches. Fancy Fur has a knit gauge of 10 stitches to produce 4 inches when using size 13 needles. The crochet gauge is six single crochets on a size P hook or size 15.

    Identification

    • The texture of Fancy Fur is a blend of eyelash yarn and kernels or slub yarn. Eyelash yarn is made up of strands approximately 1 to 2 inches long. Slub yarn is nuggets of yarn that are scattered along the strings that hold the eyelash strands. Fancy Fur is a multi-colored yarn that is twisted. It comes in an array of colors, such as Pretty in Pink, which is a combination of pink, purple and turquoise. Another combination is Tiger Eye, which is orange, white and black.

    Features

    • Fancy Fur yarn is 55 percent polyamide and 45 percent polyester. Polyamide and polyester blends are used in industry to make reinforced woven fabrics such as seat belts, according to PHP, a manufacturer of polyamide and polyester yarns. Fancy Fur is an excellent choice for making scarves or belts because the threads are unlikely to pull apart once knitted or crocheted. It also reinforces wool or acrylic yarns when knitted together.

    Care

    • Fancy Fur is easy to care for. It may be machine washed or dry cleaned. Lion Brand recommends that the water temperature does not exceed 40 degrees C or 102 degrees F. Any solvent can be used, if dry cleaned. It should not be bleached. Bleach will destroy the vibrant colors. A machine dryer may be used, but the item should not be smoothed out with an iron. It will melt the fibers.

    Purchasing

    • Fancy Fur yarn is still available in yarn and craft stores, though it cannot be reordered since production has stopped. Online companies still stock the yarn. The skeins of yarn are 50 grams, 1 3/4 ounces and 39 yards long. Check the dye lot. Fancy Fur yarn is dye-lotted, so yarns with different dye lots will have a slight variation of color.
