Public relations professionals design and promote programs that create a favorable image to identify an organization to the general public. A public relations assistant is an administrative professional who supports public relations staff within an organization, which includes advertising and marketing initiatives, scheduled public events and news releases.

Educational requirements can vary for this occupation. Some employers will accept a high school diploma or GED if the tasks are general administrative functions to support a public relations department. If tasks include general public relations responsibilities, employers require a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications or business administration with an emphasis on marketing. An assistant may handle basic public relations responsibilities such as arranging for public relations efforts through media, purchasing advertising space, attending community events and trade shows, as well as creating press releases. These professionals may also do extensive research to find best sources for advertising, creating public awareness of the organization and developing marketing campaigns.
