Chief Economist Job Description
An economist is an expert in the science of economics. Chief economists usually provide intellectual leadership related to the aspect of economics. This individual contributes to the concept, design and implementation of economic projects. He provides vision, insight and technical advice to research projects usually in an effort to increase socioeconomic statuses.

The chief economist supervises research projects conducted. Economic research is analyzed and assessed by the chief economist. He heads economic research related to occupational and policy issues in society or in relation to a company. The chief economist may also train non-economists to conduct research.
Education

Chief economists hold a graduate degree in economics or resource economics--or a related field like public policy. Coursework for the future economist include microeconomics, econometrics and environmental economics and resource economics.

Along with educational qualifications, the chief economist must be qualified to complete duties in this position. Background experience that qualifies the professional for this position includes at least two years experience in a policy-related position or an individual with a broad background in extensive research work.

The chief economist should communicate well in written and oral communication. He is a motivator and mentor. Chief economists carry the skill of being creative thinkers and are able to work under tight deadlines and pressure. They are managers, supervisors and possess strong technical economics skills. This includes quantitative, statistical and analysis skills.
