Fluorescent lighting and other types of new light bulbs save money.

Standard incandescent bulbs have barely changed during the last 130 years--maintaining the same basic design. Having always dominated the lighting market, as of 2010, standard incandescent bulbs still make up 85 percent of the world's lighting even though it is the most inefficient type of lighting available. Currently, there are several alternative types of lighting that are used in homes, as well as within outdoor and public areas. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Longer-lasting Incandescent Bulbs

    • Due to the short lifespan of incandescent light bulbs, there are now longer-lasting versions of incandescent bulbs. They are designed the same; however, they have a larger tungsten filament, which allows them to burn for up to 2,500 hours, more than the standard bulb, which usually lasts 1,000 hours.

    Tungsten Halogen

    • Another spin off of incandescent lighting is the tungsten halogen light bulb. These bulbs operate off of a tungsten filament as well, but they work to recycle heat, which allows them to be more efficient, as well as last longer. They have a coating--as well as a gas inside--that reflect heat, making the bulb require less energy to operate.

    CFLs

    • CFLs or Compact Fluorescent Bulbs are a type of bulb that operates off of fluorescent technology. They are 25 percent to 35 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs and last normally around 10 times as long. Fluorescent lighting produces UV light that makes a phosphor coating glow.

    Fluorescent Tubes & Circlines

    • Other types of lighting include fluorescent tubes and circlines. Fluorescent tubes have become extremely popular in kitchen and garage areas. Circline fluorescent lamps come in 4-foot or 8-foot models and stand off the floor. They offer a longer-lasting and cheaper alternative to traditional incandescent lamps.

    Solar Lighting

    • A popular type of lighting--due to being hands-free--is solar lighting. Solar lights are generally used as outdoor lighting; they don't use electricity but rather the sun's power. Solar lights contain solar cells that absorb light from the sun and then store it in batteries until the user decides to turn on the light. This type of lighting is ideal in sunny areas that provide enough energy to operate the light as needed.
