What Is Counter Strike Steam?

"Counter Strike" is a team-based first person shooter game. Steam is the matchmaking service used by "Counter Strike" to find and host games. "Counter Strike" does not feature a single player campaign, making Steam a necessity to enjoy "Counter Strike."

  1. History

    • Released in 1999, "Counter Strike" started out as a free modification (referred to by gamers as a "mod") for the popular Valve Software game "Half Life." As the mod became more popular than the actual "Half Life" multiplayer game, Valve noticed and eventually hired the creator of the "Counter Strike" mod. "Counter Strike" was given a proper retail release in 2001. To coincide with the release of "Half Life 2" and Steam, Valve announced "Counter Strike: Source," an updated version of "Counter Strike" running on a newer engine.

    Gameplay

    • In "Counter Strike," players can choose from two teams; the terrorist or the counter-terrorist. The goal for both teams changes depending on the map (level) that is being played. The objectives for counter-terrorist range from rescuing hostages, defusing bombs or eliminating the terrorist team entirely. The terrorist must stop the counter-terrorist from completing his objective. Through individual player kills and/or team wins, players earn money that can be used to purchase weapons at the beginning of each round.

    Weapons

    • The weapons in "Counter Strike" are designed to function and look just like their real life counterparts. Lighter weapons (such as pistols) produce higher rates of fire, while heavier weapons (such as rifles) have reduced rates of fire but can inflict more damage. Additional items like kevlar and helmets can be purchased to reduce damage taken by certain guns.

    Steam

    • When Steam was released, it replaced the old WON.net system that "Counter Strike" used for matchmaking. Steam allows players to search for "Counter Strike" games based on the map they want, the number of players specified and other variables. Steam features a friends list, allowing players to instantly add other players and join them in-game. The server browser allows players to favorite the good servers and hide the bad ones, which saves time when looking for future games.

Differences Between Counter Strike and Counter Strike: Source

    • "Counter Strike: Source" uses the "Source" engine, an updated engine that produces realistic physics, higher resolution textures and more up-to-date graphics than the original "Counter Strike." Because of the change to the physics, certain guns do not behave as they do in "Counter Strike."
