What Is Earth Day for Kids?
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 in over 100 countries. It's the biggest environment event worldwide and has a 40-year history. Earth Day is all about celebrating the earth and the environment and keeping the Earth in the best shape we can. Several organizations reach out to kids in their festivities to help make an impact on the next generation who will be taking care of the Earth.

Nelson's message has reached the masses. Earth Day began as a grassroots demonstration led by Gaylord Nelson, an environmentalist. Nelson reached out to leaders such as President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, and worked until people started to understand that it was important to take care of the Earth. On April 22, 1970, millions participated in the very first Earth Day, and the following year, it was officially recognized as an international holiday. Millions continue to celebrate Earth Day around the globe.

Kids love nature. Though a few issues stay on the forefront, there are several pressing environmental issues. For the purposes of Earth Day festivities, however, popular topics are often recycling, conserving water or energy and activism, including saving animals, planting trees and fighting pollution. By focusing on a few approachable topics, Earth Day is more accessible to the public and to children. It's a lot easier to explain the need of planting trees to young children than the topic of global warming.

Earth Day advocates stress doing all that you can at home to help the environment. Kids can be a part of several activities that make a difference. Turning off the water while you brush your teeth and taking quick showers helps conserve water. Turning off the lights when you leave a room or unplugging appliances that aren't in use conserves energy. Plus, all of these simple activities save on energy and water bills! There are also things kids and their families can do outside of the house--like bringing their recyclables to the proper location, planting trees and getting involved in their community to help make the Earth a better place.

Many cities hold carnivals and parties to celebrate this event. Joining together as a group to support the Earth helps to remind people how important it is to take care of Mother Earth, and that although the impact we make alone is small, there are many people who are devoted to saving the Earth and are always working to make it a better place.
