Dolce&Gabbana is split into two brands: Dolce&Gabbana (spelled without the spaces), which is the luxury label, and D&G, which offers affordable brand name fashion. The fashion label is likened to other luxury fashion houses such as Gucci and since its creation in 1985 remains under the ownership of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, both of whom created the brand. The company was founded in 1982 and by 1985 was exhibited in Milan, where it was met with high praise.

Domenico Dolce is one half of the Italian fashion house. Domenico was born August 13, 1958, in Polizzi Generosa, which is a small village near the city of Palermo in Sicily, Italy. Domenico's father was a tailor and he credits that as being his first introduction to the world of fashion. When Domenico Dolce finished high school, he moved to Milan to pursue his passion for fashion. In 1980 he met Stefano Gabbana, and within two years, the two were partners in business under the fashion label Dolce&Gabbana.

Stefano Gabbana was born in Milan on November 14, 1962. Stefano studied graphic design at the University of Milan and notes that until the age of 15, he was not interested in fashion for himself, let alone as a career. Only after working in the field of advertising after graduating from the university did Stefano Gabbana realize his heart was in fashion. Once making that crucial decision, Gabbana took a job as an assistant to an atelier, where he met Domenico Dolce in 1980.

Dolce and Gabbana initially began their creative collaboration in 1982 as a romantic couple but split in 2005. They remain friends and business partners. Within three years of the brand's formation, the duo showcased their clothes in the 1985 Milan fashion show and by 1989 they hosted the grand opening of their first boutique in Japan. The brand become one of the most desired brands by celebrities following the 1993 Madonna "Girlie Show" world tour, which featured 1,500 original Dolce&Gabbana pieces.

In addition to the clothing line, which offers clothes for men, women and children, Dolce&Gabbana have expanded the label to include fragrances, swimming attire, sunglasses and glasses, luxury jeans, suits, and shoes. Most recently Dolce&Gabbana introduced a makeup line, which expanded on the fragrances and now includes nail polish, eyeshadow, mascara, liner, lip gloss and more.
