VeriSign is a service provider for Internet infrastructure, involved in multiple areas but prominent in the security field. It is a trusted security provider, chosen by 96 of the world's 100 largest banks for online transactions. It also handles Domain Name Systems, or DNS, with more than 50 billion searches per day.

  1. History

    • VeriSign was spun off from RSA Data Security Inc. in 1995, and since then it quickly evolved to become one of the most important companies supporting the Internet infrastructure. In 2000, it acquired Network Solutions Inc. and made its entrance in the domain registration business. With the buying of Illuminet Holdings in 2001, VeriSign made its entrance in the telecommunications field as well.

      Under the telecommunication field, VeriSign provides interconnection solutions for different carriers and facilitates wireless and landline inter-connectivity.

    • The world has 13 authoritative DNS root servers, of which two are operated by VeriSign. These are used to assure the accessibility to sites via simple-to-remember site names and domains, instead of Internet protocol addresses.
