Paper Hats Art Activity

Paper Hats Art Activity thumbnail
Need a hat to fit your pirate princess? Make a quick but sturdy bucaneer hat out of paper.

Liven up any holiday or birthday party by incorporating paper hat making into the festivities. With common household supplies such as tape, glitter and scissors, you can customize costumes or create important props for the holiday. Whether you are outfitting the next pirate captain or enabling the next chef in the family, paper hats are an inexpensive but fun way to get the look you want.

  1. Pirate Hat

    • Use newspaper and extra colored construction paper to make a pirate hat for the next buccaneer recruit. With a few folds of a newspaper, you can create a sturdy, triangular shaped hat. Upon completion of the basic structure of the hat, use construction paper to decorate the hat. You may want to just add a paper feather to the hat or you may want to add a thick red paper band. If desired, completely cover the hat with black construction paper then add a paper cutout of a pirate skull and crossbones to the front of the hat.

    Chef Hat

    • Do you want to impress friends with your cooking look? With a cutout band of poster board paper and several tissues you can create a realistic chef hat. Staple or tape a thick band of white poster board in a circle that will fit the head of the person who will be wearing the hat. Outline the band with the tissue paper and carefully tape the tissues together until they cover the whole head space.

    Halloween Hats

    • Put the finishing touches on any wizard or a witch costume with a quick pointy hat. Using newspaper or a large piece of construction paper, form a long cone shape whose base fits the head size of the person it is intended for. Add cutout paper stars to the hat if it is meant for a wizard. You may want to add long pieces of yarn or hay to the back of the hat to mimic witch's hair. For a witch hat you may want to add a paper brim around the base of the cone using construction paper.

    Top Hat

    • What could leprechauns and President Abraham Lincoln have in common? The tall top hat associated with leprechauns and Lincoln can be easily created using construction paper or poster board. Form a large rectangular piece of paper into a cone whose base will fit the head circumference of the person who will wear the hat. After securing the size with tape or staples, cut the top circumference of the cone into long flaps that, once folded down, will cover and form the top of the hat. Make a brim out of paper with the desired color. For a leprechaun hat you may want to use green paper for the whole hat and add a yellow paper band at the base of the hat. Use black colored paper for the Lincoln hat.

    Valentine Heart Crown

    • Create a crown of love next Valentine's Day. Color a large paper plate red or pink. From the center of the plate, divide the plate into eight large, evenly spaced slices. Leave an inch border around the edge of the plate where you do not mark the plate. After cutting and creating eight triangular shaped pieces, bend the triangles up to create the points in the crown. Cut out tiny hearts to put at the top of the crown points. You may want to add glitter to the hat.
