    Installation

    • Both openers require placing a frame on the openers roof that connects to the garage door. Screw-driven openers are easier to install because the belt-driven ones requires running a long belt inside of a track that follows the frame. A screw-driven opener requires installing a long screw, which is less of a hassle than installing the belt-driven one.

    Noise

    • Belt-driven openers are very quiet. Screw-driven ones are louder with the potential to become even louder. Once the screw gets older, it needs oiled. If it is not oiled, it will squeal, which may reach ear-piercing levels.

    Wear

    • The belt in the belt-driven opener will stretch over time. When the belt stretches out too far, the door will not open and will have to be replaced. On the other hand, a screw drive needs to be oiled. It may also rust because it is made out of metal.

    Repair

    • The screw is the common piece that needs replaced in the screw-driven opener. It will costs around $50 to buy a replacement screw. The belt costs about the same for a replacement. Other than those pieces, the two have metal frames that rust over time. They are $10 a piece to replace.
