Retail sales advisors are employed to sell a range of goods.

Retail sales advisors are employed to sell a wide range of goods from jewelry, furniture and used cars. Many sales advisors are expected to work toward sales targets and often earn commission on their sales. Sales advisors are required to have a thorough knowledge of the products they sell in order to inform customers and maximize sales.

  1. Education

    • There are no formal entry requirements to work as a retails sales advisor, although employers prefer those who have a high school diploma. Many companies offer on-the-job training where candidates learn product information, sales techniques and company rules. Training can last from a few days to several months. In smaller stores, new sales advisors are often trained by shadowing a more experienced sales advisor. Sales advisors benefit from having an interest in the type of products being sold. For example, a car salesperson is expected to be knowledgeable about cars.

    Skills

    • Retail sales advisors are required to have a neat personal appearance and strong communication skills. Sales techniques, such as being able to handle customer objections, are beneficial in maximizing sales and therefore increasing earning potential. Sales advisors are expected to work well with others, be enthusiastic and have the ability to work toward targets.

    Working Environment

    • The majority of sales advisors work in stores, although some sales advisors--such as those selling cars or plants--may work outside. Day to day, sales advisors assist customers in making purchase decisions, conduct transactions and help package items. Duties may include helping to replenish stock or price ticket items. This is not usually expected of those dealing with goods that are more expensive. Hours vary but most retail sales advisors are expected to work some evenings and weekends in order to cover store hours and meet customer needs.

    Salary

    • Many new sales advisors with no experience earn the U.S. federal minimum wage, which was $7.25 an hour as of 2009. Salaries vary widely depending on the area of sales. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wage in May 2008 of a retail sales advisor was $9.86. The highest earners were automobile sales advisors, who earned on average $18.91 an hour.

    Job Outlook

    • Employment for sales advisors is expected to grow by around 8 percent up until 2018. Job prospects for new sales advisors are positive because of the many workers who leave to start new careers each year. Some retail sales advisors also work their way up through the company to become supervisors or managers.
