Warnings
-
Salicylic acid can cause skin irritation and should not be applied to large areas of the body or used for a long period of time to avoid increased and unwanted absorption into the skin. Studies have also shown that using a salicylic acid makes skin more prone to sun damage so sunscreen should always be worn on areas that have been treated with salicylic acid.
Application
-
Chlorosalicylic acid should not be used more often than instructed by the manufacturer to avoid salicylic acid poisoning due to absorption through the skin. Avon's Night Revitalizing Cream which contains chlorosalicylic acid is only to be applied at night before bed on clean skin.
Side Effects
-
Besides skin irritation from salicylic acid, other side effects include dryness or peeling of the skin, redness or unusually warm skin. Symptoms of salicylic acid poisoning include confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, headaches, hearing loss, fast or deep breathing, lightheadedness, nausea, rapid breathing, ringing in the ears, severe drowsiness, stomach pain and vomiting.
